The New Mexico Israel Alliance began as a group of friends at the end of 2008, who were distressed by large public anti-Israel demonstrations in Albuquerque and the lack of public response by Jewish or Christian organizations in the area. From 2010-2011 we formed the NM chapter of the Zionist Organization of America. In 2012 we decided to be a completely independent group, renamed the New Mexico Israel Alliance.
Since 2009 we have helped monitor developments in the anti-Israel blocks in New Mexico and work to counteract their anti-Israel propaganda and their adverse effects at UNM and in our area.
We co-sponsored Marc Prowisor of the One Israel Fund, who spoke in Albuquerque in May, 2010 at UNM and Abundant Life Christian Center in Belen.
Also in 2010 we called for and took part in the “buycott” for Trader Joe’s in Albuquerque, which was lead by the Jewish Federation.
We hosted Yishai Fleisher’s visit to Albuquerque and Santa Fe in July 2010 and February 2011, bringing him to speak at UNM, the Jewish Community Center, Santa Fe Chabad and Kol BeRamah in Santa Fe.
In June, 2011 we helped bring Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute in Jerusalem to speak at UNM and at Kol BeRamah in Santa Fe.
In February, 2012 we co-sponsored Nonie Darwish’s talk at UNM. This talk suffered a planned disruption by students in the unOccupy group, arranged by Students for Justice in Palestine, because the talk was sponsored by the UNM pro-Israel student group.
Currently the Israel Alliance is working to raise money to help cover the legal costs of an attendee at the Nonie Darwish talk who has been unjustly charged by UNM, and we are working on various fronts to improve the situation at UNM so that other groups will be able to bring speakers without fear of aggression by radical student groups or selective prosecution by UNM.
We are not a political group and do not lobby or endorse candidates or political parties. Our members have various political and religious views and backgrounds. The common denominator is strong support of Israel and the belief that we should be bold activists for Israel and not spectators.
NM Israel Alliance is a New Mexico non-profit corporation.
